The History of Yoga - A Comprehensive Global Guide

I am sure you are eager to know about Yoga history. Where was it practiced the first time, when, how and its evolution, all until it spread worldwide and is practiced everywhere and by millions of people of different sexes, ages, and races.

At first, we should know the meaning of the word Yoga. It is derived from the Sanskrit root Yog, and it means to bind or to join, as it unites the body, mind and soul.

Actually, there is no exact knowledge of its history. Experts estimated that Yoga's origin was around 5,000 years ago, and it was in India. There was uncertain evidence that its origin was in Afghanistan. However, it is certain that Yoga's origin was in the East. Archeologists excavated stone seals from the Indus valley with artifacts and evidence of Yoga existence on it, as they found figures of people doing different Yoga postures. This proves that people were practicing it in stone ages, and that its origin was in India. The Indus-Sarasvati civilization was the largest one those days, and was so modern in their times. In addition, there was evidence of Yoga in the Veda text (the oldest text used in the Indus times).

The Vedas are a collection of 1008 hymns that praises a higher power, they are on ethics, cosmology, philosophy, and science. They contain the oldest Yoga basics, techniques and rules. Therefore, we call it Vedic or Pre-classical Yoga. The Rig Veda is a sacred work by Hindu faith. Most of its myths personified the forces of nature. These times, people used to rely on rishis (Vedic Yogis) to teach them how to live in harmony.

The Aranyakas texts then followed, detailing rituals for Yogis living in the forest. This also served the beginning of India's medical tradition known as Ayurveda. Around 1900 B.C., the great Sarasvati River dried up, forcing the exodus of the Indus-Sarasvati civilization southward towards the Ganges River.

The Brahmins and Upanishads are spiritual texts, written around 600 to 800 B.C, and they were dealing with the rituals performed by Brahmin priests. The Brahmins is a text explaining the Vedic rituals and hymns.

The Bhagavad Gita (song of the blessed Lord), written around 300 B.C, is a spiritual poem on Yoga. The "Gita" is part of the eight chapters' epic called the Mahabharata. The Bhagavad Gita is a discourse delivered by Krishna (the Lord) to Arjuna (the hero) expounding on the goal of life. Between 200 and 800 B.C, Patanjali detailed all the knowledge about Yoga in 196 aphorisms (sutras). These sutras referred to as Raja Yoga. Patanjali is part of the classical Yoga, where they were still practicing thousands of yoga asanas. They considered Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is the authoritative text on classical yoga.

This was a hint about Yoga's history. It shows us how old it was, and how essential it was in old times. It also shows us that Yoga has a strong relationship with our lives, and it was there long time ago, may be since human beings exist on earth. As if, human beings cannot live without it. Actually, it is true, and you will never believe this except when you practice Yoga yourself, you will be like "How come I was living without that?" Yoga is the best way to live a normal and peaceful life.

Next, we should know about the Yoga evolution, far away from those old times and gradually to our times. We classify this into four stages, the pre-classical Yoga, the Classical Yoga, the Post-classical Yoga, and the modern Yoga.

Yoga history reaches back to ancient times, to India where it is still practised today. It is traditional disciplines of the mental and physical. There have been many changes in the thousands of years since it began. It was first a teacher and a disciple training. Its purpose was for a gaining of a spiritual goal with self realization, to be enlightened and for the liberation of the individual soul.

Yoga remained like this without much change for a long time. Changes came about during the time of the expansion along the Silk Road, around five hundred CE.

Around this time other forms emerged with several masters who were influential with change. From this period on yoga began to move to a more social role and the teachings became movements for the improvement of society as well as spiritual accomplishment.

Again there was change around one thousand five hundred CE. Teachers were already beginning to impart their knowledge of Hatha Yoga and the physical practice, things such as breath control and postures.

The ideas of a spiritual goal and enlightenment etc, began to be overlooked and the aim of yoga was the developing of a flexible and healthy body.

Yoga has recently assumed an extensive role in the daily lives of people. 2. NIYAMAS: The second guideline, as presented by Patanjali, is the Niyamas. These niyamas relate themselves with the discipline of the inner self. They promote the leading of a disciplined life.

3. PRATYAHARA: This commandment of Patanjali is an integral part of yoga as well as yoga history. It speaks about the virtues of meditation and letting oneself be free of the world and all its related issues.

4. ASANAS (POSTURES): An umpteen number of people know asanas (postures) as the only facet of yoga. It is these asanas which people perform to achieve health and stability of the body as well as the mind. If one knew how yoga originated, and also understood all of the eight commandments of Patanjali, one will be able to perform these asanas more effectively and with precision.

5. PRANAYAMA: Pranayama is the control of one's breathing. It is meant to the clear the mind and body and works as a precedent to pratyahara, i.e. meditation.

6. DHARANA: This is another form of meditation where the entire concentration is focused on one object or activity. This is performed to improve one's control over one's mind.

7. DHYANA: Here, the meditation is focused on the absolute instead of just an activity or an object. If one delves into yoga history, one would realize that such dhyana has been accorded with more relevance than some of the other forms of meditation.

8. SAMADHI: This is the stage where an individual completely submits oneself to the almighty and experiences real bliss.

These eight commandments, in the history of yoga, define the true enlightenment that one can receive by practicing yoga.

Traditional Indian systems of Ayurveda & Yoga

Ayurveda places equal emphasis on the mind and body, it aims to integrate and balance the body, mind, and spirit. This balance is believed to lead to contentment and health, and to help prevent illness. The chief aim of Ayurvedic practices is to cleanse the body of substances that can cause disease, helping reestablish harmony and balane.

India has a long history of medical remedies practiced by holy men and local medicine men since ancient times. Some of these remedies date back to the Vedas or 600 BC. Among these medical wonders the two most prominent are Ayurveda and Yoga.

Ayurveda literally meaning the science of life, Ayurveda has evolved from understanding the laws of nature, the psyche, the conscious and the unconscious levels.

Ayurveda places equal emphasis on the mind and body, it aims to integrate and balance the body, mind, and spirit. This balance is believed to lead to contentment and health, and to help prevent illness. Constitution or Prakriti Ayurveda has some basic beliefs about the body's constitution. Constitution refers to a person's general health. The constitution is called the prakriti which is a unique combination of physical and psychological characteristics and the way the body functions. It is influenced by such factors as digestion and how the body deals with waste products. Three qualities called doshas form important characteristics of the constitution or prakriti and control the activities of the body.

The doshas are called: vata, pitta, and kapha. Each dosha is made up of one or two of the five basic elements: space, air, fire, water, and earth. Ayurveda believes that an imbalance in the dosha produces symptoms and disease. Imbalances may be a result of an unhealthy lifestyle or diet; too much or too little mental and physical exertion; or not being properly protected from the weather, chemicals, or germs.

Ayurvedic treatments

Ayurvedic treatments are of many types Panchakarma is for cleansing; it focuses on the digestive tract and the respiratory system. Cleansing may be done through enemas, fasting, or special diets or medicated oils through a nasal spray or inhaler. Meditation is a conscious mental process using certain techniques like focusing attention or maintaining a specific posture to relax the body and mind, and lying in the sun. The patient may be advised to seek nurturing and peacefulness through yoga, meditation, exercise, or other techniques.Herbal Medicines patients may have to take herbs to improve digestion, reduce fever, and treat diarrhea. Very small amounts of metal and mineral preparations also may be given, such as gold or iron. Special Diets are an important part of treatment and patients may be asked to abstain or increase particular foods. Massages may be used to reduce pain, lessen fatigue, or improve circulation. Ayurveda proposes that there are 107 "vital points" in the body where life energy is stored, and that these points may be massaged to improve health.

Yoga As Part Of An Anti-Aging Plan

Can yoga be an effective part of an anti-aging plan?

While the topics under discussion are obviously yoga and having or making an anti-aging plan, it has become obvious over the last few years that anything done to improve personal health, increase flexibility, optimize the cardiovascular system, improve strength, increase the efficiency of organs and glands, and/or keep a person mentally alert and feeling glad to be alive has a place in any anti-aging plan.

Even though my contention is certainly going to be that yoga can produce all the effects mentioned, and maybe more, some people will simply not be attuned to donning a leotard, lighting candles, chanting to the tunes of other-worldly CD's, and attempting to bend their bodies into positions they know they cannot attain anyway!There will be people interested in the aging process who are genuinely willing to do a lot to create an effective anti-aging plan but who are just not interested in yoga. While I cannot address each possible consideration in such a short article which is dedicated to the specific topic of yoga, I can say that any exercise program or regular activity can produce many similar physical results. Regularly challenging the mind, by puzzles, by learning new skills, or by placing oneself in social situations rather than withdrawing from them can certainly help maintain not only intellectual vigor but encourage physical activity and help defend the body against the effects of an unrestrained aging process. Attention to proper nutrition is valuable in this process as well.

In fact, there is no reason why anyone should not, or would not, use all of the above suggestions as part of an anti-aging plan whether they practice yoga or not! Yoga, while effective in this plan is not the only thing that someone should be doing, nor should they wait until they are "old" to begin the process. In fact, the sooner the better. Starting a child on a path that includes health, fitness, intellectual stimulation and growth, and a love of life and the people around us is a means of insuring that the child will, as Mr. Spock says, "Live long and prosper."

To speak in generalities about yoga as part of an anti-aging plan is a simple task. It produces physical fitness, encourages overall health of mind and body, helps keep the intellect stimulated, helps with the removal of toxins from the body, increases flexibility, helps improve the effectiveness of the immune system...the list goes on.

However, what can be said specifically about yoga and aging? After all, those comments are just words that I have placed upon a page.

Well, others have placed such words as well, and have been applauded by the medical community as well as the general public. For example, in their acclaimed book "YOU: The Owner's Manual: An Insider's Guide to the Body that Will Make You Healthier and Younger", authors Michael F. Roizen, Mehmet Oz, who are concentrating on the physical side of life, applaud the daily practice of yoga as it relates both to life and to aging. The authors are both MD's. Dr. Roizen has provided health care to eight Nobel Peace Prize winners and more than 100 Fortune 500 CEOs and CFOs, and countless others. He has been in the Best Doctors in America since 1989. Dr. Oz is professor and vice-chairman of surgery at Columbia University. He is also medical director of the Integrated Medicine Center and director of the Heart Institute, New York Presbyterian/Columbia Medical Center.

Below is an excerpt from an interview conducted by WebMD.com. Dr. Roizen is speaking in response to a question about the daily practice of a short yoga program:

Physical activity has three major components:

  • Any activity -- such as walking.
  • Strength building activity -- such as lifting weights.
  • Stamina activity -- such as any activity that gets you to sweat in a cold room.

Yoga constitutes two of those, that is, any activity and resistance activity because you are holding a body part in a position that gains strength.

All of these activities decrease aging of your arteries, decrease aging of your immune system, make your hormone system youthful and increase muscular skeletal strength, keeping your bones and muscles stronger. By keeping your immune system younger, this little activity of five minutes a day helps prevent cancer and immune dysfunction, which prevents things like infections and many forms of arthritis.

"Additionally, the regular practice of yoga breathing throughout a full yoga workout can assist with improvement in cardiovascular health, while it is possibly a good idea to include some sort of cardio specific activity. Regular practice of yoga creates a state similar to meditation which has been shown to improve mental acuity and reduce stress, a major player in aging. It obviously increases flexibility and improves balance. Regular practice of yoga can improve the functioning of internal organs and glands, and aids in digestion.

Also, despite the arguments against yoga earlier in this article, No special clothing is required, nor does any specific type of atmosphere need to be created. I travel a lot, and have often done my yoga routine in my underwear on a small strip of floor beside the bed while my wife watched the news on TV. While setting the stage properly can assist with some of the concentration and attitude that makes for a more highly effective yoga session, it can be done anytime, anywhere, by anybody.

Nor is the ability to convert yourself into a pretzel required. The goal of any yoga practitioner is to do what he or she can to achieve the posture or movement. The people shown in pictures are the ones who have gotten to that point generally after years of practice, and, as in any activity, some are just going to be better at it than others. Regularly doing what you CAN do to the best of your ability will return positive results.

My recommendation? It's obvious. I believe that yoga can be an effective part of an anti-aging plan even if it is not the only part.

We chase job after job, business after business with the hope of gaining more money - but for what?We deal with health problems with an ever-growing list of substances from alcohol and drugs to painkillers and sleeping pills, yet we fail to recognize the underlying cause of such ailments.

Relationship seeking becomes an essential part of our life, each subsequent relationship is designed to overcome the limitations of the first and satisfy our ego giving us that short-term fix that eventually leads to the very thing we hope to prevent - loneliness, unhappiness and unfulfilling relationships.

Through all of this "tactical living", we become lost, adopting outward beliefs, impressions and values to help make the many decisions we must make each day.

A Beginner’s Guide To Yoga Asanas

Asanas are very helpful in bringing rejuvenation to your body and mind. Asana happens to be one of the limbs of yoga practices. You learn tolerance, balance, patience and perseverance through yoga asana.

By asana we mean various Yoga postures. There are good number of asanas offering different exercises to body as well as mind. If you are the one who has just made a tryst with Yoga, you would be first of all made to do basic yoga asana. These basic asanas are only meant to make your body accustomed to Yoga practices. You get accustomed to yoga practice by gaining increased flexibility through basic asanas.

Some popular asanas are as follows-

Shvasana: It is known as corpse pose. The asana requires you to lie on back in a completely rested state.

Utkatasna: This yoga asana happens to be awkward for many as the pose needs to be in a sitting position without chair. While keeping this pseudo sitting pose you are instructed to raise your hands towards sky or ceiling.

Padmasana: It is a sitting posture with erected back. You are also made to place your legs on opposite thighs. This asana tests your tolerance level.

Dhanurasana: It is a bit complex asana which is also known as bow position. You are made to lie with the help of your stomach and thighs with raised legs and hands taking hold of legs by raising upper portion of body. Resultant postures happen to be bow shaped.

Vajrasana: This posture demands you to bend on your knees in such a way that your hips could be placed on corresponding foots or ankles. You are also directed to rest your hands on knees.

Navasana: In this asana you are required to lift both of your legs while being in a sitting posture. Legs should make an angle of forty five degree from the surface of floor.

All these asanas are a great mixed bunch of easy and complex asanas. If you happen to be a beginner you should only opt for asanas for beginners. And practice them for your holistic health improvement.

The Bikram Yoga Experience

Everyone has heard of yoga and knows of it as a series of postures to stretch and rejuvenate your body. What is Bikram yoga and what differentiates it from other forms of yoga? Bikram yoga is a specific style of yoga founded by Bikram Choudhury. Bikram yoga is often referred to as hot yoga as it is practiced in a room heated to 105 degrees with a humidity of 50%.

Everyone has heard of yoga and knows of it as a series of postures to stretch and rejuvenate your body. What is Bikram yoga and what differentiates it from other forms of yoga?

Bikram yoga is a specific style of yoga founded by Bikram Choudhury. Otherwise known as "hot yoga", Bikram yoga, named after it's founder, is fairly advanced yoga moves done in a one hundred and five degree room with humidity at fifty percent, so you will most definitely be sopping wet when leaving.

The origin of this type of yoga is spiritually derived from Hinduism and regionally from Yoga College of India. Bikram yoga consists of 26 asanas or postures and two breathing exercises.

The word asana translates to the word "seat" which refers to the spirit in relation to the divine. Asanas are intended to lead back to sitting in meditation. Asanas are meant to improve your muscle flexibility and strength.

These moves, called asanas, are supposed to be practiced together with pranayama, or slow breath work for maximum benefit. Your breaths should be through the nose, not the mouth, and should be slow, not forced, and totally natural. To receive maximum benefit from practicing asanas, all tension and tightness in the body should consciously be let go.

A glass of water before practicing asanas enhances the experience and asanas should not be done on a full stomach. The practice of Bikram yoga is meant not only to improve muscle strength and flexibility, but also to establish a balance of our physical beings in relation to the divine.

Yoga is a path to attain a balance of the body, mind and spirit. Yoga can, if done correctly, be a means to control the ongoing complaint in all of our lives, stress. Optimum health is the ultimate goal for everyone of us. Health does not just refer to our physical beings but also to our mental attitudes and spiritual growth.

Bikram or hot yoga addresses emotional as well as physical well being and flexibility. When I visited my daughter in California, she signed me up for my first experience with hot yoga. Being in my fifties, I was a little concerned about the prospect of being a complete amateur at any kind of yoga and the possibility of being the oldest participant in the class.

When I entered the flaming hot classroom, it was clear to me that, to my relief I was not the "oldest one" in the class room. I was happily surprised at my ability to do so many of the postures. My self realization during the hot yoga class was my need to "stress" or hurry up at all times.

Constant focus on slowing down the breath and only breathing through my nose was a challenge for me. The heated room was something I thought I would not be able to tolerate. It did add to the yoga session and is probably one of the reasons I did not have aching muscles or pulled tendons the next day.

During some of the postures, I was keenly aware of my need to improve my balance and my sense of my physical position in space. For ongoing achievement of balance, I have been practicing the art of yoga via an instructional DVD in my home.

Particularly useful to me, in addition to the improvement of balance is the yoga reminds me to slow down and relax the tension in my body. The concept of the heated room in Bikram yoga is to diminish the risk of injuries and to allow you to go deeper into each posture.

The perspiration experienced during hot yoga enhances the release of toxins. The postures consist of warm up poses that can be done prior to a yoga class. There are standing poses and seated poses. The twist yoga poses have the purpose of strengthening your back, toning the abdomen and helping with digestion.

Inverted poses help you with your circulation. There's supine and backbend poses and finally the finishing poses to end your yoga session with relaxation.

Bikram yoga is designed to assist you to lose weight, tone muscles and increase blood circulation. Since this form of yoga helps lower stress levels, it can improve mental clarity and focus. Lets look at correct breathing and its benefits.

As we have control over it, in yoga philosophy it is believed that if we can breathe correctly we can energize our bodies and our lives. This fundamental believe in correct breathing is seen as the basic cornerstone of yoga and other forms of exercise such as Ti Chi – They all base their exercise regime upon correct breathing.

Breathing correctly why it’s so important

In many languages to breath has the same basic root as the word soul, spirit, and essence. The ancient Yoga Masters believed that if you can control your breathing, i.e. breath correctly you can enhance your life.

In Yoga it is believed that the breath holds more than just air, but also the energy of life. Therefore, by breathing correctly we not only take in a necessary dose of oxygen, but we also receive life energy at the same time, that acts as an energy boost to the whole body.

Breathing correctly to energize your body

The 20th century Yoga Master, Paramhamsa Yogananda taught through his organization, the Self-Realization Fellowship, a series of re-energizing exercises that focused on correct breathing that if performed each day, were believed to keep you fit, active, alert and energetic.

Correct breathing is one of the basic building blocks upon which all yoga exercises are based upon.

In yoga it is stressed that when you were feeling tired, or need some energy and general body re-charging, a correct breathing exercise can instantly give you a boost of energy.

Breathing correctly

Stand upright, with your arms straight out to your sides at shoulder level.

Exhale with the double breath, with your knees bent slightly and then bring your arms (still extended) to the front until your palms touch.

Then with a double inhalation this time, bring your arms back out, straightening your legs as you do so - and then tense the entire body upwards in a wave fashion.

Now, relax the body downwards in a wave in reverse order with another double exhalation. Repeat this exercise 5 times. To help you understand this, and to do it correctly, double breathing must be a short and long inhalation through the nose and a short and long exhalation through the nose and mouth.

The double breath will allow you to inhale and exhale more deeply and to provide oxygen to the blood, and at the same time take in a dose of life energy.

To practice the double breath, you should begin by inhaling strongly through the nose immediately with a short, defined inhalation followed directly by a long, profound inhalation - completely filling the lungs.

When doing so visualize the energy going into every cell of your body and filling you with energy.

Without pausing, exhale twice through the nose and mouth with a short, then a prolonged exhalation - making the sound: "Huf, Huffffffff."

Try to visualize as you are breathing correctly, the life energy flowing into your body with every breath reenergizing your soul.

The positive benefits of correct breathing

If you practice only this exercise daily, you will gain positive benefits that will help you look and feel better.

Not only will you feel fresh and alert, you will also have exhaled by breathing correctly, many toxins and negative particles produced through our respiration process.

You will as a consequence look and feel healthier, you will be alert, and gradually you will come to sense the life energy that breathing correctly can give you.
